A Quick Look at Slurpee and 7-Eleven History
-
First 7-Eleven store: Opened in Dallas, Texas in 1927
-
First Free Slurpee Day: Launched in 2002 to mark the brand’s birthday
-
Origin of the Slurpee:
The frozen drink was first developed by Omar Knedlik in the early 1960s. After partially freezing soda bottles at his Kansas Dairy Queen, he went on to invent and patent a slushy machine with the help of John E. Mitchell Company.
By 1965, 7-Eleven licensed the technology and gave it the now-iconic name — Slurpee.
