Does Winning the Community Shield Lead to Premier League Success? – Full Stats & History

The Community Shield 2025 is here, with Premier League champions Liverpool facing FA Cup winners Crystal Palace at Wembley. But one big question remains: Does lifting the Community Shield really predict a strong season ahead?

According to history, the answer is no – at least most of the time.

Community Shield Winners vs. Premier League Champions

Looking at the Premier League era (since 1992), only 8 out of 33 Community Shield winners have gone on to win the league title in the same season.

Interestingly, 5 of those 8 occasions happened in just six years between 2005 and 2010.

  • Manchester City (2019) were the last team to win both the Shield and the league in the same season.

  • Before them, Manchester United (2011) achieved the same under Sir Alex Ferguson.

  • In recent times, teams losing the Community Shield have actually gone on to win the Premier League more often – 10 times since 1992, including Man City three seasons in a row (2021–2023).

In fact, 45% of the time (15 out of 33 seasons), the team that wins the league was not involved in the Community Shield at all.

Who Usually Wins the Community Shield?

Historically, Premier League champions have lifted the Community Shield 55% of the time (18 out of 33).

However, there’s good news for FA Cup winners – in the past 11 years, they have won 7 Shields, compared to just 5 wins in the previous 22 years combined.

There have even been rare cases when neither the league nor the cup winner claimed the Shield:

  • Arsenal (1999, 2023)

  • Manchester United (2010)
These teams qualified as league runners-up but still beat the Double winners.

Do Community Shield Goalscorers Have Great Seasons?

This statistic is a mixed bag.

  • In 2023, Cole Palmer scored for Manchester City in the Shield before moving to Chelsea, where he netted 22 league goals and won Young Player of the Season.

  • In 2022, Darwin Núñez scored for Liverpool on debut, while Erling Haaland didn’t score in his City debut – but Haaland went on to hit 52 goals that season.

  • Some scorers, like Kelechi Iheanacho in 2021, failed to replicate their Shield form, scoring just 4 league goals that season.

  • Others, like Raheem Sterling in 2019, used the Shield as a springboard to their best-ever campaigns (31 goals).

Final Verdict – Does Winning the Community Shield Matter?

While the Community Shield is a prestigious season opener and a confidence booster, history shows it’s not a reliable predictor of Premier League success.

Winning it might give a psychological edge, but league glory depends on consistency, squad depth, and performance across a long season.
