 Cooper Flagg Makes NBA Summer League Debut with Mavericks, Bronny James Adds 8 for Lakers

NBA fans got their first look at Cooper Flagg in a Dallas Mavericks jersey during Thursday’s Summer League matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers. The highly anticipated debut of the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft brought a mix of promise and growing pains, as the Mavericks edged out the Lakers 87-85.

Flagg finished the game with 10 points, shooting 5-for-21 from the field. He also added 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Despite a quiet second half where he didn’t score, Flagg made key contributions late in the game — including a crucial block and an assist on the game-winning 3-pointer.

“It wasn’t my best, but I’ll get better,” Flagg said after the game. “I know what I’m capable of.”

His first basket in the NBA came in highlight-reel fashion — a transition dunk that energized the crowd. Though the shooting numbers weren’t ideal, Flagg made his presence felt in other ways, showing flashes of his versatility, basketball IQ, and defensive instincts.

Across the court, Bronny James — son of NBA legend LeBron James — had some exciting moments of his own, especially in the first half. He scored 8 points on 2-for-8 shooting, but like Flagg, went scoreless after halftime. The two rookies even shared a few competitive moments on the floor.

While the spotlight was mostly on Flagg and James, other players stood out. Cole Swider led the Lakers with 22 points, while Dallas guard Ryan Nembhard impressed with a polished 21-point performance, further boosting his stock.

It remains uncertain how many more Summer League games Flagg will play. With the Mavericks viewing him as a future cornerstone of their playoff-contending roster, they may choose to limit his appearances.

As for the Lakers, Bronny James and fellow first-round pick Dalton Knecht are expected to get extended playing time throughout the Summer League to prove themselves. Their next opportunity comes Saturday against the New Orleans Pelicans.
