The Chattogram Royals secured a commanding 65-run victory over Noakhali Express in the opening day of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2025 at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Friday. Mirza Baig’s brilliant 80 off 69 balls and an all-round performance by skipper Mahedi Hasan were the highlights of Chattogram’s win.
This match also marked a significant change in Chattogram Royals’ management after their previous owner withdrew ownership just a day prior to the game. Despite the off-field challenges, the team showcased resilience and determination. Chattogram posted a competitive 174-6 in 20 overs, while Noakhali Express were bundled out for 109 runs in 17.4 overs, struggling to keep pace with the required run rate.
Chattogram Royals’ Innings
Despite heavy dew, Mahedi Hasan chose to bat first. However, they lost key opener Mohammad Naim early, who managed only 11 runs off 11 balls before being caught off Mehedi Hasan Rana’s bowling.
Mirza Baig, the Pakistani recruit, anchored the innings with a composed and effective knock. His partnerships with teammates boosted the total:
-
35 off 25 with Mahfijul Islam (16 off 12)
-
58 off 41 with Mahmudul Hasan (17 off 12)
-
39 off 22 with Mahedi Hasan (26 off 13 at the end)
Mirza’s innings featured seven boundaries and two sixes, finishing on the final delivery of the innings. This solid foundation enabled Chattogram to post a strong total, putting immense pressure on Noakhali.
Bowling support from Chattogram was balanced. Left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam grabbed 3-39, while Mahedi Hasan (2-17) and Shoriful Islam (2-14) supported efficiently. Mukidul Islam, continuing his fine form from the National Cricket League, took 2-18, and Abu Hider added 1-19.
Noakhali Express’ Chase
Noakhali Express struggled from the start, losing three wickets inside the powerplay to become 39-3. Maaz Sadaqat tried to stabilize the innings, but wickets kept tumbling around him. Opening partner Habibur Rahman Sohan scored 15 off 7 balls but failed to build a meaningful partnership. Haider Ali contributed 28 off 24 balls, yet the required run rate climbed steadily, increasing pressure on the chasing team.
Chattogram’s bowlers maintained a tight line and length throughout. Tanvir Islam’s spin was particularly effective, consistently troubling the Noakhali batsmen. Combined efforts from the bowling unit ensured that Noakhali never got back into the game, sealing a comprehensive 65-run win for Chattogram Royals.
