San Diego Padres Acquire Mason Miller and JP Sears in Blockbuster Trade with Athletics

By Zamal Uddin

The San Diego Padres have made a major move ahead of the MLB trade deadline, acquiring All-Star reliever Mason Miller and left-handed starter JP Sears from the Oakland Athletics, according to sources reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

In return, Oakland will receive Leodalis De Vries, the No. 3 overall prospect in baseball, marking one of the most significant MLB trades of the 2025 season.

🔥 Mason Miller Joins Padres’ Elite Bullpen

Miller, 26, has been a standout performer for the Athletics this season, posting:

  • 20 saves

  • 3.76 ERA across 38 appearances

  • An average fastball velocity of 101.1 mph

Miller was an All-Star in 2024 and now strengthens a Padres bullpen that already features Robert Suarez (MLB leader with 30 saves) and top setup man Jason Adam.

With Miller’s arrival, San Diego’s relief pitching becomes one of the strongest bullpens in MLB, though reports suggest Suarez himself could be moved before the July 31 trade deadline.

⚾ JP Sears Adds Depth to Padres’ Rotation

Alongside Miller, the Padres have also secured left-handed starter JP Sears, adding much-needed depth to their starting rotation as they push for a playoff berth in the 2025 MLB season.

💰 Athletics Land Top Prospect Leodalis De Vries

In exchange, the Athletics are betting on the future with the acquisition of Leodalis De Vries, a highly ranked minor league shortstop and considered one of the top young talents in baseball. This move signals Oakland’s continued rebuilding strategy, focusing on long-term player development.
