Oklahoma City Thunder Rookie Nikola Topic Facing Testicular Cancer Diagnosis

Rising NBA star Nikola Topic, a 20-year-old guard for the Oklahoma City Thunder, has been diagnosed with testicular cancer and has officially started chemotherapy treatment, the team confirmed earlier this week.

Topic, who was the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, underwent a medical procedure on October 6 at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, to perform a biopsy that later confirmed the diagnosis.

Thunder General Manager Confirms Diagnosis

Thunder general manager Sam Presti announced the news in an official team statement, assuring fans that Topic’s long-term health outlook remains very positive.

“The results of the biopsy have been returned, and he is dealing with a case of testicular cancer,” said Presti. “Nikola didn’t want to make this public until he had begun his treatments, which he has now. He’s been training and working out through this entire process and has handled it with remarkable strength.”

Presti praised Topic for his resilience and professionalism, adding that the young player has the full backing of the Oklahoma City Thunder organization during this challenging time.

“He has a tremendous group of oncologists who are extremely optimistic about his recovery,” Presti continued. “Our only expectation for him right now is to focus entirely on his health. Basketball will come later. He has our total love, support, and encouragement.”

No Timeline for Return to Basketball

Although Presti did not give an exact timeline for Nikola Topic’s return to basketball, he emphasized that the team’s priority is his complete recovery.

“His main job right now is to get healthy,” said Presti. “There’s no pressure, no time frame. We’re simply standing by him and making sure he gets the best care possible.”

Topic has continued light workouts and rehabilitation despite his diagnosis, showcasing the same determination that made him one of Europe’s most promising young basketball prospects before joining the NBA.

Background: From Serbian Prodigy to NBA Rookie

Before being drafted into the NBA, Nikola Topic was already a rising basketball sensation in Serbia. Known for his sharp playmaking ability, court vision, and mature leadership, he quickly caught the attention of NBA scouts.

In the 2024 NBA Draft, Topic was selected 12th overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder, a franchise celebrated for its focus on youth development and long-term team building.

However, his debut season faced a major setback due to a serious knee injury, which sidelined him throughout the 2024–25 NBA season — a season that ended with the Thunder winning the NBA Championship.

Despite not playing, Topic remained active in training and team activities, reflecting his commitment to recovery and development.

Team and Fan Reactions: Strong Support for Topic

Since the announcement, messages of support have poured in from NBA fans, players, and analysts across the world. Many praised Topic’s courage in confronting such a serious illness at a young age while maintaining his professional focus.

Thunder teammates reportedly visited Topic in Houston and continue to communicate with him regularly. The team has pledged to provide ongoing emotional, medical, and financial support throughout his treatment.

Several NBA stars, including Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren, shared encouraging messages on social media, emphasizing that the Thunder organization is “a family first and a team second.”

Outlook: Positive Signs for a Full Recovery

Doctors at MD Anderson have given an optimistic prognosis, citing early detection as a key factor in Topic’s positive outlook. Testicular cancer, when diagnosed early, has one of the highest treatment success rates among cancers.

Fans are hopeful that the young guard will make a full recovery and eventually return to the court stronger than ever. For now, Topic’s focus remains on his health and treatment, supported by his teammates, medical team, and fans around the world.

As the sports community rallies around Nikola Topic, his journey serves as a reminder that courage and resilience extend beyond the basketball court. The entire NBA family and Oklahoma City Thunder fans stand united in wishing him a full and speedy recovery.
