Trump India Tariffs 2025 Live Updates: US President Doubles Tariffs on Indian Imports to 50%, India Calls Move "Unfair"

By Zamal Uddin | August 6, 2025

In a major trade escalation, US President Donald Trump has doubled tariffs on Indian imports to 50%, citing India's continued purchase of Russian oil as a national security concern. The decision was announced via Executive Order on Wednesday, adding an additional 25% duty on top of the existing 25%, significantly impacting India-US trade relations.

🔴 Trump Signs Executive Order to Penalize India

The White House stated that India’s import of Russian oil poses an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to US interests. Trump’s new order raises tariffs across various Indian sectors, including:

  • Automobile parts

  • Textiles

  • Electronics

  • Steel and chemicals

  • Pharmaceutical products

While the initial 25% tariff remains effective, the additional 25% levy will take effect on August 27, 2025.

📉 Impact on India’s Exports

According to Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), these tariffs could:

  • Make Indian goods 40–50% costlier in the US

  • Significantly reduce India’s exports to America

  • Cause disruptions in the supply chain, particularly in manufacturing and pharma industries

This escalation could further widen the US-India trade imbalance, forcing Indian businesses to explore alternative markets.

🇮🇳 India Responds to Trump’s Tariff Hike

The Indian government has officially termed the move “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable”, vowing to take necessary actions to protect its national and economic interests.

India’s trade ministry stated that it will review potential countermeasures, including:

  • Possible retaliatory tariffs

  • Seeking remedies through World Trade Organization (WTO)

  • Engaging in diplomatic talks to de-escalate tensions

🗣️ Anand Mahindra’s Reaction

Indian business tycoon Anand Mahindra reacted to Trump’s decision on social media, saying:

“We cannot fault others for putting their nations first.”

This comment reflects a pragmatic approach to shifting global trade policies under Trump’s administration.

  • US doubles tariffs on Indian imports to 50%, effective August 27, 2025

  • Trump cites India’s Russian oil purchases as primary reason

  • Indian exports to the US could drop by 40–50%

  • India vows to defend its trade interests through legal and diplomatic channels
