🌍 Understanding Earthquakes in New Jersey
Although New Jersey is not typically known for high seismic activity, the Ramapo Fault Line in northern New Jersey occasionally triggers small earthquakes each year. Most are too weak to be felt, but larger quakes do occur:
-
April 5, 2024: A 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck Tewksbury, NJ, shaking buildings across New York City and felt as far as Maine and Virginia, impacting 42 million people. Over 205 aftershocks followed, with the strongest measuring 3.7 magnitude.
-
Historical Record: The largest earthquake in New Jersey’s history occurred on Nov. 29, 1783, registering 5.3 magnitude.
🔎 Recent Seismic Activity
-
July 21–22, 2025: A series of small quakes hit Morris Plains, NJ, starting with a 1.6 magnitude tremor and followed by five aftershocks, the strongest reaching 2.0 magnitude.
-
This latest Bergen County earthquake is the second in less than two weeks, raising concerns about increased fault line activity in the region.
